Who is Lawrence Kohlberg?
Lawrence Kohlberg was an American psychologist well known for his work concerning the development of moral reasoning. While studying Psychology at the University of Harvard, Kohlberg expounded on the work of Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget and offered a theory that supposed six sequential stages of moral development. Each stage in this sequence afforded a person greater dexterity in maneuvering moral dilemmas, greater capacity to appreciate the value of mutual respect, and thus reflected a growth in a person's ability to function cooperatively in society. Though various criticisms have been leveled at Kohlberg's theory over the years, including gender bias, recent years have nevertheless borne out the catalytic effect of his work and contributions to the field of moral development.
